More connected, yet more alone

We carry the whole world in our pockets. We chat across borders, play together at 2 a.m., and follow people we have never met. Yet loneliness keeps rising, and some withdraw completely.

Every person bears the image of God (imago Dei). Technology should strengthen people and communities, not fragment them.

AI can do or even replace many things humans can do, e.g. automate tasks, handle communications or even make decisions, but humans should always be accountable and be present when it comes to dealing with one another, especially on deeper and spiritual matters. Jesus demonstrates incarnationally how he is present with people, and we can follow his model.AIは作業の自動化、コミュニケーションの処理、さらには意思決定など、人ができる多くのことを行い、時には代わることさえできる。

    Be transparent

People should always know when they are talking to a bot. Builders should always be responsible for the tech they build. AI must never pretend to hold spiritual authority.

God is moving in Japan's gaming scene

Traditional mission in Japan often reaches people already in church. This goes where non-Christians already spend their time: online gaming communities.
    • The power of gamingゲームの力Many hikikomori identify with otaku culture. Games that weave in faith and personal testimonies open new ways to share Jesus.
Not just “Christian games”, but a local and global community where gamers and developers support one another: church beyond buildings.

Anime, oshi and identity: reaching third spaces

They flew in just to talk to Kanade for one minute

“They took a flight just to talk to me.”「私と話すためだけに、飛行機で来てくれたの」

Ask: what does someone hope to find in one minute with their oshi? What does that tell us about belonging?

    Key idea

What is an oshi, and why has it gone global?「

From 推す (osu), “to push” or “to recommend”. Your oshi is the person or character you support and cheer for: an idol, a VTuber, an anime character, an athlete.「推す」(応援する・薦める)から。

Oshikatsu (推し活): supporting your oshi: streams, merch, events, fan art, birthdays.

Once a niche idol-fan word, it became everyday Japanese. Rin Usami's novel Oshi, Moyu (Idol, Burning) won the Akutagawa Prize in 2021.

    Why worldwide?

    1. Streaming puts anime and idols on every phone, at the same time as Japan
    2. VTubers and livestreams make the relationship feel personal: your name read aloud, your message answeredVTuber
    3. Social media turns private fandom into a shared identity: fan names, colours, hashtagsSNS
    4. A universal longing: to have someone to look up to, and people to share it with. K-pop calls it a “bias”; the feeling crosses borders普遍的な渇き:憧れる存在と、それを分かち合う仲間がほしい。
